School Spatial Analysis

An exercise in various methods of spatial analysis.

The first map features ArcGIS generated Thiessen polygons, a means of distributing space so that any random point/location within a polygon is closer to the given site than any other.

The generated Thiessen polygons are only considered "potential" areas served since they do not account for actual accessibility via roads or the relative sizes of the school sites.

Puget Sound and other water-bodies were polygons extracted from a basemap, to indicate that the simplest area served by a Thissen polygon does not account for areas not covered by land.

This second map is one of many layers of analysis, in this case an attempt to indicate the relative sizes of schools. The smallest 20% are indicated by the simplest building indicating schools in ArcGIS symbology while the biggest 20% are represented by one of the more stylistically distinct symbols indicating a school (and are respectively larger).
