GIS Certification Project

GIS certificates call for an independent research capstone project, spanning much of the academic year.

  • This section draws from preliminary proposal presentation slides.

  • An area of personal interest includes the local transit system. In 1902-- mere years after a devastating fire-- Seattle had an electric railway system route to Tacoma. (And eventually Everett as well.) Though it would end up dismantled just 20 or so years later, this stands in stark contrast to the modern day hopes of where we even dream to plausibly achieve permanent public transportation infrastructure.

  • Even in the most ideal of situations Sound Transit cannot assure the light-rail line will reach Federal Way by 2040, which is still over ten miles away from Tacoma's existing (and currently incompatible) light rail line.

  • I proposed looking at where the service areas of historical, existing, and emerging lines; how well they serve various communities;  and any potential shortcomings or remedies.
